10 Years in Canada Celebration - Personal Project

To celebrate 10 years since moving to Canada (as well as just over 1 year as a citizen) I decided to try put together The Most Canadian Image Ever, featuring one of my life long favourite Canadian characters, Deadpool. This was an incredibly fun and rewarding personal project, my first in years as I've been recovering from a pretty harsh burn out professionally. This really helped get me back in the groove.

I hope you enjoy scouring the image for every reference. I had a lot of fun attempting to both include relevent Canadian references as well as capture Deadpool's unique flavour of comedy.

DP's scarring leads to some great synconicity between the more aggressive brushes in zBrush and Substance Painter's gorier material mixing

I really need to get better at modeling "the goods", but maybe DP having a stereotypical super hero crotch is kinda appropriate for the character anyway. Really like how the belt turned out

I had way too much fun making BUD (conveniently the acronym for Blow Up Doll). I think this feels like something DP would do as both an homage to his reverence for fellow canadian wolverine, in his own special way, as well as what he'd have to resort to.

I've since corrected the floating right boob, fear not. And yes, those are supposed to be frankfurters (some chewed on) for claws. Think of that what you will

The hippo was one of my favourite Canadian references. In the 90's, there was this amazing canadian VFX commercial featuring a "house hippo" that seemingly convinced an entire generation that these things existed. It's inclusion just felt perfect for this

so yes, a VHS tape isn't terribly exciting, but as a relative noob and mostly self taught (I'm trained as an animator actually), learning how to get the materials to feel real on this object was a big win for me

I tried to recreate the shortest totem from Vancouver's Stanley Park. I think its close enough for the reference to land. Painting the indigenous markings gave me a huge appreciation for what the IRL artists achieved with these works

Not my best work, but I was pretty strict about not wanting to use anyone else's art or buy anything premade in this piece, so at the last minute I went and drew my own makeshift Captain Canuck fan art
